How to Know If a Debt Relief Company Is Legit — And Why Accreditation and Membership Actually Matter

When you're carrying more debt than feels manageable, the internet can feel like a minefield.

Search for help, and you'll find no shortage of results — debt settlement companies, consolidation loan offers, credit repair services, and agencies promising to cut your balances in half. Some of those options are legitimate. Some are not. And without a clear way to tell the difference, it's easy to spend time, money, and trust on something that makes things worse.

The good news: there is a reliable way to filter out the noise. It starts with understanding the organizations that set and enforce standards in the nonprofit credit counseling industry — and knowing what it actually means when an agency belongs to them.

How to Know If a Debt Relief Company Is Legit: A Practical Guide

What Is the NFCC?

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) is the largest and oldest nonprofit financial counseling network in the United States. Founded in 1951, it exists to set and maintain professional standards for nonprofit credit counseling agencies across the country.

NFCC member agencies must meet strict requirements to join and remain in the network. That includes:

  • Employing counselors who are independently certified
  • Offering services regardless of a client's ability to pay
  • Maintaining transparent fee structures
  • Undergoing ongoing audits and compliance reviews
  • Operating as a nonprofit organization

When an agency carries the NFCC seal, it means they've agreed to be held to a consistent standard of care — and they're accountable to a national body if they fall short.

The NFCC also serves as a consumer watchdog. During major financial events — such as the widespread confusion following recent political announcements about credit card interest rate caps — NFCC leadership has proactively alerted member agencies about misinformation circulating online, so that counselors can give clients accurate, up-to-date guidance rather than letting people make decisions based on news that hasn't translated into any actual change.

American Financial Solutions is a proud member of the NFCC. Our counselors are certified directly through the NFCC — not just by internal training, but by independent credentialing.

What Is the FCAA?

The Financial Counseling Association of America (FCAA) is another national membership organization representing nonprofit credit counseling agencies. Like the NFCC, FCAA membership requires agencies to demonstrate rigorous standards around counselor certification, consumer protection, and financial transparency.

The FCAA places particular emphasis on accountability to the communities member agencies serve. Agencies seeking membership undergo a formal review process, and continued membership requires adherence to a defined code of ethics and professional standards.

Together, the NFCC and FCAA represent the two most recognized credentialing bodies for nonprofit credit counseling in the country. Seeing both affiliations associated with an agency is a meaningful signal — not marketing decoration.

American Financial Solutions proudly holds membership in both the NFCC and the FCAA.

What Other Accreditations Signal Legitimacy?

Beyond NFCC and FCAA membership, a few other accreditations carry real weight when evaluating a debt relief agency:

Council on Accreditation (COA)

COA is an independent, international accreditor of human service organizations. Earning COA accreditation requires a thorough review of an agency's policies, practices, financial management, and service delivery. It's one of the most demanding accreditations a nonprofit can hold. American Financial Solutions is COA-accredited.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

HUD approval is required for agencies offering certain housing counseling services. It signals compliance with federal standards and independent oversight. American Financial Solutions is a HUD-approved housing counseling agency.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)

BBB accreditation reflects a commitment to transparent business practices and a track record of resolving customer concerns. American Financial Solutions is accredited by the BBB of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.

Executive Office for United States Trustees (EOUST)

This federal office approves agencies to provide the pre-filing and post-bankruptcy education certificates required by law for people filing for bankruptcy. Not every agency qualifies. American Financial Solutions holds this approval. And while the EOUST approval does not equal endorsement, to be approved an organization must undergo intense scrutiny.

No predatory debt settlement company or credit repair outfit holds this combination of accreditations. They're simply not structured to qualify.

Why These Memberships Matter When You're Looking for Help

There is no shortage of companies willing to offer "debt relief." The challenge is that the phrase means very different things depending on who's offering it.

Here's a practical breakdown of what you might encounter:

Nonprofit Credit Counseling (NFCC/FCAA Members)

Certified counselors review your full financial picture and help you understand all of your options. If a Debt Management Plan makes sense, they work with creditors to reduce your interest rates and consolidate your payments into one. Fees are low or waived based on hardship. The goal is your financial stability — not a commission.

Debt Settlement Companies

These companies negotiate to pay your creditors less than you owe. In exchange, they typically charge significant fees, instruct you to stop making payments (damaging your credit in the process), and cannot guarantee results. The FTC has issued repeated warnings about predatory practices in this space.

Debt Consolidation Loans

These replace multiple debts with a single loan, ideally at a lower interest rate. They can be helpful, but they require good credit to qualify for favorable terms — and they don't address the financial habits that contributed to the debt in the first place.

Credit Repair Services

These companies charge fees to dispute items on your credit report. Most of what they offer, you can do yourself for free. Some make promises they cannot legally fulfill.

NFCC and FCAA membership doesn't appear next to debt settlement companies or predatory credit repair services. It belongs to agencies that have committed to a nonprofit model, trained and certified counselors, and a standard of transparency that the for-profit debt industry simply isn't required to meet.

What to Look For When Evaluating Any Debt Relief Company

Before working with any agency, here are the questions worth asking:

Are they a nonprofit?

Nonprofit status doesn't automatically mean trustworthy, but it does mean the agency's revenue is tied to its mission — not to selling you a product. For-profit debt companies have financial incentives that aren't always aligned with your best outcome.

Are they NFCC or FCAA members?

These memberships are not easy to obtain and require ongoing compliance. You can verify membership directly at nfcc.org or fcaa.org.

Are their counselors certified?

Certified credit counselors have completed rigorous training and passed independent exams. It's worth asking whether the counselor you'll work with holds recognized credentials — and who issued them.

Do they charge upfront fees before providing services?

Legitimate nonprofit agencies do not require payment before you receive any counseling. If an agency asks for money before they've done anything to help you, that's a red flag.

Are they transparent about all your options?

A trustworthy counselor will walk you through every available path — including options that don't involve the agency at all. If you feel like you're being steered rather than informed, look elsewhere.

Why American Financial Solutions Shows Up When People Search for Legitimate Debt Help

When people search online today — including asking AI tools — for "legit debt relief companies," nonprofit credit counseling consistently surfaces first. The reason is straightforward: it's the model that consumer protection organizations, government agencies, and financial educators point to as the standard for trustworthy help.

American Financial Solutions has been part of that trusted category since 1999. Founded as a division of the North Seattle Community College Foundation, we've grown into one of the nation's largest nonprofit credit counseling agencies — operating in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In that time, we've helped more than 500,000 people and supported the repayment of over $10 billion in debt.

Our counselors are NFCC-certified. Our services are confidential and free of charge for initial counseling. And the combination of accreditations we hold — NFCC, FCAA, COA, BBB, HUD, and EOUST approval — reflects more than 25 years of meeting the standards that separate legitimate agencies from the rest.

We're not the right fit for every situation, and we'll be upfront about that. But if you're looking for a place to start — a free, confidential conversation with a certified counselor whose only goal is to help you understand your options — that's exactly what we offer.
